Our Aim

Hi! Our team consists of Isabelle, Tevin and Aadya. Our aim is to eradicate water pollution in Indonesia. Through extensive research and planning, we’ve come up with a solution which can definitely help! Our idea will clean dirty water and make it safe enough for people to use without causing any diseases or other problems to start.

What is the problem? – Water Pollution

The Citarum River in West Java, Indonesia

The picture above is one of the most polluted and longest rivers in the world. The Citarum River is located in West Java and is extremely polluted. This is due to the fact nearby factories dump their chemicals into the rivers through pipes. These pipes contribute to the water’s deterioration and make the water non-drinkable. This, unfortunately, is a harsh reality in many rivers across Indonesia which causes a lot of harm to people.

Water pollution is a serious problem in today’s world. More than 50 kinds of diseases are caused by poor drinking water quality, and 80% of diseases and 50% of child deaths are related to poor drinking water quality in the world. Polluted water causes some of the deadly diseases like cholera, dysentery, diarrhoea, tuberculosis, jaundice, etc. These diseases are dangerous and can result in death as well. Which is why we need to stop water pollution or, at the very least, try to reduce it’s impact significantly.

Our Idea

The first draft of our machine

The first picture above is our prototype for our Reverse Osmosis Machine or ROM. The machine uses the process of reverse osmosis which filters the water and removes the dirt particles from the water. The machine will have 4 semi-permeable membranes which will filter out the water. This machine will be placed by the side of rivers and will clean the water to make it clean enough for drinking and other uses.

What we took inspiration from:

The second picture is what we took inspiration from because it shows the process of the water being filtered using the semi-permeable membrane and how salt water was cleaned in order to get fresh water. We believe our idea can reduce water pollution significantly because it helps clean the water and make it safe enough for daily use.
